Newberry Medal-Winning Author Kwame Alexander Visits Greenwood
On Friday, May 3, we welcomed Newbery Medal-winning author Kwame Alexander to Greenwood to speak to Grade 7 & 8 students. He shared funny and emotional stories from his own life, and read excerpts from several of his books.
Kwame often writes about the subject of basketball, and his novels are written in a mix of free verse and hip-hop poetry. The students really enjoyed his performance, which was enhanced by musician Randy Preston's singing and guitar playing.
Kwame's presentation was very interactive - with students calling out lines of poetry and guessing what would come next. Kwame even convinced the English Subject Team Leader Michelle Douglas to get up and rap!
After the performance, students had the opportunity to purchase some of his books through Mabel's Fables and have them signed by Kwame himself.
A huge thank you to Kwame and Randy for making literacy so fun!
