Greenwood’s Environmental Committee meets once a week to develop green initiatives that they hope will encourage the community to be more aware of their environmental impact.
Throughout the year, the Environmental Committee has hosted countless Meatless Mondays where students and staff can earn House points by bringing in a meatless lunch. Some of the committee members have even taken it upon themselves to write out some of their favourite plant-based recipes. Students can check these recipes out by logging into Greenwood’s website and clicking the ‘Green Initiatives’ tile in ON. You can also view some of their favourite recipes here.
During the first week of March, the Environmental committee hosted another round of Walk to School Days. On these days, the community is encouraged to walk to school rather than drive, to reduce carbon emissions. Although it was quite cold, over 70 students and staff walked to school and earned House points for their efforts.
Next week, the committee will host a Water Wednesday and Thirsty Thursday competition in honour of World Water Day on March 22. Students and staff are encouraged to bring in reusable water bottles to help decrease their ecological footprint, all while earning House points.
The Environmental Committee is also looking forward to their big event in April: Greenwood Earth Week. This special week will run from April 26-30 and there will be a number of green-themed activities. Stay tuned for more info in the coming weeks!
The hope is that the Greenwood community will integrate these green habits into their daily routine. The Environmental Committee has a number of resources that can help you be more eco-friendly, so don’t forget to check out the ‘Green Initiatives’ tile in ON.
