I’ve had nothing but positive experiences participating in Greenwood musicals. It’s difficult to describe the satisfaction I received from belting out “Git it!” from Little Shop of Horrors, or the incredible feeling during my bow at the end of a show. Just thinking about it gets me so excited for the Grade 9 and 10 musical that we’re pleased to present during the second week of May.
The show is High School Musical, which shares the message of breaking free from social boundaries in a high school setting. The story follows a star athlete and a timid nerd who discover a passion for singing while simultaneously falling for each other. I play a basketball player who has a secret passion for baking, and also does the morning announcements. My basketball skills certainly don’t match the talent of my character, but hopefully it will be enough for our basketball scenes on stage!
The best part of working on a musical is the rehearsal environment that developed with my castmates. Singing and acting in front of each other takes a lot of bravery, and we all recognize that doing so means putting yourself in a vulnerable position. The beautiful thing that comes from rehearsing is a natural sense of trust between each other, bringing us all together as a cast. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know some of the Grade 9s, an opportunity that has been missing throughout the pandemic. It’s all just added to the experience in a really fantastic way.
Since auditions at the end of October, everyone has been working really hard. It’s been a slow burn, but thrilling to see it all come together. As we’ve started to run the entire show, and begun rehearsing with the band, the anticipation has started to build. I can confidently say that we are all pumped to be performing in front of an actual live audience, and we can’t wait to share our work with the Greenwood community.
A shout out to our directors, Ms. Borden and Ms. Vlahos, as well as our musical director, Mr. Piasetski, who have all put in so much hard work over the past six months. We’re also pleased to have several teachers and over 25 students enthusiastically involved behind the scenes and on our crew. In addition to all that, the senior instrumental music class will join us as our live pit band – they sound terrific!
Don’t forget to buy tickets (
