Meet Your Committees: Social Action Committee

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
In an interconnected world, students are increasingly exposed to current social issues whether it’s through social media, their friends or in the classroom. Greenwood’s Social Action Committee (SAC) finds meaningful ways to address these social issues with help from the school community. SAC’s goal is to raise awareness and money for causes and organizations that benefit those in need and/or important causes.

Whether it’s supporting Ukraine or running a donation drive to support young mothers, SAC uses new ideas and platforms to raise awareness for these important causes. “The beauty of the committee is that as the world around us is constantly changing, so are the different opportunities to help people in different ways and through different platforms,” says SAC exec David Lawee ‘22. “There are always new problems that need to be solved and new challenges when being on this committee which allows you to make it as impactful as you want.”

Leading SAC’s meetings and initiatives alongside David are the two other co-execs, Frankie Kerr ‘23 and Libby Gangbar ‘23. During meetings, the committee discusses the issues they want to highlight and then different committee members are assigned to create the fundraising plan and activity for each initiative. This approach ensures that each committee member gets an opportunity to contribute and feels included in the process.

“The most rewarding part of being executives of this committee is seeing the connections between our fellow committee members become stronger and seeing our team's skills improve,” says Libby. “Also, we love bringing different issues to the spotlight to make sure voices around the world are heard.”

Interested in making an impact? The Social Action Committee welcomes with open arms any student interested in joining. “We love meeting new students and making sure everyone feels included in the Greenwood community,” the SAC executives enthusiastically say.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
