Learning about Accessibility in Sports

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
An important part of our Service Learning and Outreach programming is exposing Grade 7 and 8 students to new perspectives. Recently, the Grade 7s and the Grade 8s went on a field trip to Variety Village to learn more about accessibility and inclusion. Variety Village is a facility run by Variety Ontario, a charity that ensures children who are differently abled have access to various physical activities and programming.

At Variety Village, students got to see how various sports or activities can be modified to accommodate those with different disabilities. Students tried out wheelchair sport activities, roller sledge hockey, sitting volleyball, adapted floor hockey and communication activities.

Here are some photos from the field trip.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
