Sumo Robots Rumble

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
For ten years, Ontario Tech University has hosted a robotics competition for elementary and high school students. Registered teams create an autonomous robot using a Lego Mindstorms robot kit. In this year's competition, Sumobots: Battle Royale, robots battled to push other robots off the stage or to immobilize other robots. There were 31 rounds, with eight robots competing at the same time. The winner from each match moved on to the final round of eight competitors.

Greenwood’s Computer Science club met every day after school for two weeks to build their robot. They created C.A.R.L.O.S. which stands for “Cool Autonomous Robot Learning with Orientational Sonar”. C.A.R.L.O.S. was designed to find other robots using a rotating ultrasonic sensor and then sweep those robots off the stage.

The team arrived at Ontario Tech early Saturday morning on November 26 with C.A.R.L.O.S. neatly packed up. After registering, the team performed some tests to configure C.A.R.L.O.S.’s colour sensors correctly to the edge tape and table colours so it wouldn’t accidentally drive off the edge. While C.A.R.L.O.S. did not make it to the finals at Sumobots, the team had an excellent time and made many design notes for next year’s competition.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
