Staff Q and A: Get to know Sam King, House and Student Council Coordinator

Samantha (Sam) King may have arguably the most fun job at Greenwood — coordinator of House and Student Council! In this role, she works with the House Executives and student leaders.

Sam also teaches Canadian Social Sciences, History and Social Justice and Equity and has taken on something else new in her second year at Greenwood. Find out more below!

What does the House and Student Council Coordinator do?

I’m responsible for the programming and meetings with House Exec, House Council, Student Council, and Heads of Student Leadership. I also oversee student initiatives such as Spirit Day, Holiday Hootenanny, Grade Spirit Week, Friday House Meetings and more! My unofficial title is CFO (Chief Fun Officer)!

What do you like about House and Spirit at Greenwood, and why is it an important program?

Our House Program is an amazing way to meet students in other grades, foster friendly competitions during community time and school spirit weeks, and grow student leadership through our house captain program.

What was one thing you were looking forward to this year?
This was my first year directing the Senior Play at Greenwood, though I have over nine years of directing experience. It was amazing to delve into the Arts at Greenwood with our amazing cast of 67 Cinderellas!

When you have spare time what do you like to do?

I play dodgeball, paint landscapes and love canoe tripping across Canada.

What’s your favourite Greenwood memory?

I love the Just Dance battles in the Lodge!

What’s one thing people might not know about you?

I used to teach overseas in Scotland.

Do you have any advice for staff or students new to Greenwood on how to get involved?

Student council and house positions are a part of our spring leadership applications so be sure to look out for those in May! During the year, show up to house events and bring your school spirit through house clothing, learning house cheers, and getting hype for house reveal days!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
