Enjoying the hustle and bustle of May

Heather Thomas, Principal
Dear Greenwood Community,

Even after 20 years of teaching, the month of May continues to blow me away! As soon as the trees start to blossom, the pace inside Greenwood goes from fast to lightning speed.

Students and teachers are working through the final content and learning in their courses, Term 3 Athletics playoffs get underway, there’s a jam-packed Arts Week, plus Spirit Day, and final evaluations are right around the corner.

Amid the hustle and bustle of the final weeks of school, each day I am reminded of the staff and families that make up the amazing Greenwood community.

Our staff never cease to amaze me. In May, despite the day-to-day business of the month, our staff designed and participated in Staff Secret Spirit Week. The week engaged staff in daily themes and activities (mindful colouring and dress like a spy day, to name a couple) and provided some wonderful relief and joy during what can be a stressful and demanding time of year.

This month we also celebrated a landmark gift to Greenwood. Roundtable President Jennifer Peel presented a cheque for a $250,000 pledge to the school. Read more about the pledge and what it will support below. This is just one way our parent/guardian community supports the school. The Roundtable’s support was celebrated with the unveiling of a plaque on the Wernham-West donor wall near Reception.

We also welcomed back four Greenwood alumni to speak to the Grade 12 students about the first-year postsecondary education experiences and provide tips about embarking on this journey. I love seeing Greenwood alumni back in the building and hearing about life after Greenwood. See photos from the annual alumni reunion (which had an amazing turnout).

What an awesome year it’s been – and it’s not over quite yet! We still have the Awards Assembly, Celebr8, and the Class of 2025 Reception to come! And, I look forward to celebrating the 2024-2025 school year with you all at Celebration Day and Graduation on June 13 at the Elgin Theatre.

Sincerely,
Heather Thomas

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
