Thank you to everyone who joined us for Careers Morning this month, an annual event aimed at connecting students with real-life career stories and educational journeys from Greenwood alumni, parents, staff and past staff.
Students in Grades 9 to 12 were invited to sign up for two sessions, wherein two speakers shared their stories from within a wide variety of industries and roles, including business, law, healthcare, financial services, marketing and the food industry.
For Brittany Wong ‘08, it was an honour to be invited back to Greenwood as a Careers Morning speaker.
“Supporting and giving back to the next generation is something that is incredibly important to me. Throughout my own journey, I have been very fortunate to have had mentors who have guided me, believed in, and helped shape the person I am today,” said Brittany, a Senior Manager, Business Insights and Industry Growth for the NHL. “I wouldn't be where I am today without them and I want to play a role to help others achieve their goals.”
Brittany says that she hopes sharing her journey can provide students perspective, encouragement and provide a clearer sense of what's possible for their own future.
“No matter what your aspirations are or the path you take, everyone starts somewhere, and I was once a student trying to figure out what my next step would be and how to find my way.”
It was a full circle moment for Brittany this year when she realized her co-presenter Carson Crestohl ‘19 sat in her presentation when she last participated in Careers Morning in 2018.
“It was wonderful to learn about Carson’s own path and see him thriving in the golf industry,” she said. “The school building may have grown but it’s clear the sense of community is still strongly felt.”
Jacob Alvo ‘27 says the morning was very informative and engaging. He attended the Finance and Real Estate session and the Marketing session.
“It was valuable to hear honest advice and real experiences from professionals and alumni who were once in our position,” he said. “I am grateful for the opportunities Greenwood provides and look forward to the day when I can return and share my own career story.”
Jacob says each session provided him a glimpse into different career options.
“Careers Morning helps students understand what different jobs actually involve beyond what we learn in class or see online. Hearing from professionals makes it easier to think about course choices, post-secondary options, and long-term goals. It also shows the wide range of careers available and helps students picture what their own future paths could look like.”
He added that it was nice to hear personal stories from alumni, reminding him that every path is different.
“A key message I took from one alumni was that everyone has a different ideal learning and working environment, and it’s okay to choose a different path than your peers.”
Autumn Schelter ‘27 also had the opportunity to speak with Greenwood alumni. She attended the Social Work / Psychotherapy session and Healthcare/Rehabilitation session.
“It was cool and inspiring to hear firsthand how their education at Greenwood connected to real-world work, and what it was like to come back years after last learning here,” she said.
Autumn agrees Careers Morning is a great opportunity for students from Grade 9 onwards.
“It allows students to explore different options they might not have known were possible as well as ask questions and get answers directly from the people who may work in a job they are looking at pursuing,” she said. “It also helps younger students to start thinking about courses, programs, or experiences that will prepare them for possible next steps in their education and future careers.”
Thank you to everyone who visited for Careers Morning and to all Greenwood students who actively engaged in the sessions. Thank you also to the Guidance and Advancement and Community Engagement Teams for hosting the event.
