New Visual Arts Display At King Street TTC

The display features large watercolour and pen architectural renderings, one 3-D architectural model and a variety of comic-style pen sketches of buildings in Toronto.

For this assignment, students were asked to research two architectural styles. Then they went to the Doors Open Toronto website and found examples of buildings in Toronto that appear to be influenced by one of the two styles. After making some comic-style sketches of these buildings, students used Google Maps to find an empty area in Toronto on which they would like to put a building.

Using the street level function, students "walked" around the neighbourhood and compiled a list of considerations they would need to make when designing a building for that neighbourhood. (Prior to this, they watched short videos on the CBC Archives website about the planning of the Eaton Centre, the National Gallery and Habitat '67 in Montreal.

Once deciding on a location, students chose a purpose for their building and began designing. The drawings were finished in pen, and watercolours were added to complete the rendering.

This display will be on until mid-April, so be sure to check it out!

The students involved are Carly Albright '12, Clarice Baksi '12 (3-D model), Montana Kimel '12, Anna Lailey '12, Tessa Thomson '12, Zach Warne '12, Ali Abbott '12, Alexa Hardy '12, Julia Higgins '12, Hugh Kidd '12, Sophia Puccetti '12, Sam Sutcliffe '12, Torin Offord '13, Keisha Aitchison '13, Hannah Dawson '13 and Ani Dime '13.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
