Postsecondary Visits Get Students Thinking

Kate Dier
On October 18, I was given the opportunity to visit both the Oakville campus of Sheridan College and McMaster University in Hamilton. This was the first of many post-secondary tours that I am about to begin in search of finding the right school for me after leaving Greenwood. I loved the opportunity to visit both a college and a university. I think it is extremely important that students realize the options that are available, and not to feel confined to one option.

At Sheridan we were walked through a presentation while seated in a small lecture hall. We were informed of the admissions process and the highly regarded programs they have to offer. Afterward we were given a tour of the campus by students attending the college at that time. My specific tour guide was an international student from India, and it was wonderful to hear her unique experience at Sheridan.

After this visit, we continued on to Hamilton, where we visited McMaster University. We were guided by students through campus in small groups. We were informed about each building, and about what the school had to offer for each of our specific interests. Although neither of these schools holds the opportunities or programs I specifically am looking at, I still loved the overall experience; it truly got me thinking of my future education, and will act as a great comparison when visiting other schools in the near future.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
