MP Carolyn Bennett Visits Greenwood

UNICEF launched this event in 2012 to coincide with National Child Day, which is celebrated in Canada on November 20 in recognition of the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The event is marked by a one-hour visit by an MP to a local school in her or his riding during the week of November 11–15. “Bring Your MP to School Day” is an opportunity for Members of Parliament and their youngest constituents to engage in a meaningful discussion, and to learn from one another.

The Hon. Ms. Bennett was first elected to the House of Commons in the 1997 general election, and was most recently re-elected in 2011. She represents the electoral district of St. Paul’s, in which Greenwood is located.

The Hon. Ms. Bennett was gracious enough to open the floor to questions from our students, which touched on her work in aboriginal affairs, health care and food security. Many lively discussions ensued from the questions she was asked, which included:
  • What do you think of the lobbying system in Canada?
  • Do you think the voting age should be lowered to 16?
  • Why did you leave medicine?
Thank you to the Hon. Ms. Bennett for sharing her time with us!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
