Greenwood Business Students Compete in DECA Regionals

Kate Holland
DECA is a business club that runs in high schools all across Ontario, helping students get a better understanding of business and real life cases. Through co-curricular, experiential learning opportunities, DECA participants develop leadership and professional skills.

Before attending this competition, every student has to write an online exam that will later count towards their overall score. On the day of the competition, every student is assigned a competition time. Once it is time to present, students are given their case along with the other competitors in their category. No one sees the case prior to the competition, so it is new for everyone. If you are competing in an individual event, you are given 10 minutes to read and annotate the case and if you are in a team event you get 30 minutes. In each case, you are given a role and a problem you must solve and present to your judge. Once you have read and prepared a presentation, everyone is called up to their own table with their own judge, and you present. The judges' score, combined with your exam score, determines if you qualify for provincials.

This year, 12 Greenwood students qualified for provincials in February, where they will be competing with approximately 7,000 students from across Ontario.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
