Recognizing Outdoor Education Mentorship

Andrea McGavin
The Leacock Foundation’s Leadership Program brings together students in Grades 5 and 6 at Woburn Junior Public School and the Toronto First Nations School with Greenwood students to develop leadership skills and build community. Through visits to the TRAILS Newmarket outdoor education facility, as well as one-on-one classroom interactions, the students are able to experience different environments, work collaboratively and overcome challenges together, creating a unique and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

TRAILS has also partnered with Greenwood in thepast, for Challenge Week in January, when a group of senior Greenwood students planned and implemented a program for Grade 4 students at Woburn Junior PS, incorporating academic, athletic and creative components. The program for the past two years had a medieval theme, including a catapult demonstration and a trip to Medieval Times to celebrate the week’s learning.

A group of Grade 11 mentors (Sarah McElcheran, Sarah Langill, Scott Kincaid and Michael Phillips) were recognized for their work with TRAILS at last week’s assembly, where they received certificates of recognition and letters from the students they have worked with over the past year. Last year’s TRAILS participants included Grade 12 students Sydney Johnson, Tyler Pace, Devon Fleck and Heather Burt.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
