A key part of Greenwood’s strategic plan is expanding experiential learning. This year on October 24, all grades participated in various experiential learning opportunities both on and off campus. Whether it was to gain a deeper insight into their academic curriculum, exploring their self expression or learning more about postsecondary campus life, Experiential Education Day helped to broaden each student’s learning and self discovery.
For Grade 7 and 9 students, they participated in numerous workshops exploring various means of artistic expression. Grade 7s spent the morning in two workshops of their choosing from suminigashi art, acrobatics, hand lettering and improv. The Grade 7s later did a hip hop dance workshop altogether and helped to make set decorations for Into the Woods Jr. musical before rehearsing their Greenwood Mic performance with alumni, Evan Edgell ‘24 directing.
The Grade 9s started their Arts Day with a panel of Greenwood alumni who spoke about pursuing their artistic passions. The alumni also hosted acapella singing, film editing, songwriting and drawing workshops for the Grade 9s. In the afternoon, improv artists from the Comedy Bar hosted small improv workshops with the Grade 9s. The grade ended their Arts Day with a gut-busting improv performance from the Comedy Bar improvisationalists.
Thank you to alumni Fraser Allan Best ‘11, Nate Daviau ‘15, Evan Edgell ‘24 and Hannah Willis ‘15 for coming back to help make Arts Day a success!
Grade 8 and 10 students took their learning off-site to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). The Grade 8s visited the Sharks exhibit and other permanent ROM galleries for connections back to their Science and Social Studies curricula whereas Grade 10s went on a Discovery Walk to complete a project for their English curriculum.
In preparation for their postsecondary journeys, Grades 11 and 12 students went to various Ontario university campuses to gain insight into the programs, student life and opportunities. This experience helped students determine their postsecondary paths after Greenwood.
Thank you to the staff involved to help make Experiential Education Day an enriching experience for our students!
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
