Greenwood Teacher Named 2016 Ultimate Canada Coach of the Year

Kate Raven
Carla, Alena Papayanis and Kathryn Pohran ("Kpoh") coached Canada’s Under 20 Women’s Ultimate team to a gold-medal finish at the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Wroclaw, Poland. The team went into the tournament ranked second behind a dominant Team USA; despite being the underdogs, they defeated the United States by a single point in a hard-fought tournament final.

Here’s what the Ultimate Canada website has to say about the trio:

“Each of the three coaches have had a strong and irreplaceable leadership role on their respective teams. The development of young players is something they've always been part of. Each have spent countless hours helping junior players improve, while also instilling in the athletes a strong sense of belonging to the team and to the ultimate community. Their mastery of the sport and their intrinsic drive to be better is what juniors look up to. A junior can always say "I've been coached by Carla/Alena/Kpoh" with their heads held high and beaming with pride.”

Congratulations Carla!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
