Students and Alumni Face Off in Exhibition Matches

On June 2, Greenwood hosted a sports fundraiser, organized entirely by three students in Grade 11. The basketball and volleyball exhibition matches saw Greenwood alumni return to school to try their luck against the Grizzlies teams in front of dozens of fans in the audience.

Support for the games came from the Grier Nadal Fund, which supports student-led community service initiatives at the school. Three students in Grade 11, Henry Zacher, Josh Weiss and Max Bradshaw, were inspired by the fund to raise money for the Right to Play organization, which teaches children around the world through the use of educational games. All three boys are keen athletes, which made it difficult to find spare time for meetings. But the boys were up for the challenge, since, as Max says, they wanted “to give all kids opportunities to do what we did” on their sports teams. The boys planned the event, organized teams and sold tickets, raising an impressive total of over $450 for Right to Play.

The games proved to be an incredible opportunity to strengthen the ties between Greenwood students and their older peers. We love to see our alumni, and it seems they couldn’t resist the chance to once again give back at Greenwood. 17 former students attended to make up the alumni teams and gave it all they had: The volleyball match was tied, and in basketball the alums beat out the Grizzlies in a very tight game. The score came down to the final few minutes, but Dave McMurtry (described by Henry as “the best basketball player in Greenwood history”) was on the floor and led a run to steal the victory from Greenwood. What a thrill to have so many of our old Grizzly VIPs back on their home court!

We’re thrilled that Henry, Josh and Max took the initiative for this event, as it serves as a great example of an authentic, real-world learning task. The boys hope to make the games an annual tradition so that they can participate after leaving Greenwood. Josh says, “Some of my favourite times at school are when we are able to play around in the gym, and being able to come back to Greenwood after I graduate and have this opportunity to enjoy myself with old friends and teachers would be an amazing experience.”
