Tuesday, June 13 was an exciting day for students in Grades 7 and 8, who wrapped up the community service they had been conducting all year at Community Service Day. Students participated in one of two activities with their buddies from Regent Park schools: Buddies of students from Lord Dufferin had an activity day full of games in the park, and Nelson Mandela buddies went to Riverdale Farms and played animal bingo.
All students in Grades 7 and 8 participate in the Community Service program at Greenwood, where they engage in a weekly Reading Buddies program with younger students in Regent Park. Greenwood students are paired with students in Grades 1 and 2 to read books, complete literacy activities and develop friendships. These experiences are then connected to learning integrated in the classroom, including social, economic, and historical issues in various communities in Toronto.
This program is an excellent way for our youngest students to develop leadership skills and to experience the benefits of serving others. They develop special friendships with their younger buddies, so Community Service Day is often one of the most anticipated days of the school year. We look forward to launching our Buddies program once more in the fall!
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
