An Award Fit for a Prince

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards have long been part of Greenwood’s co-curricular programming. The Awards are an opportunity for students to be recognized for their work outside the classroom, rewarding them for completing activities in service, skills development, physical recreation, adventurous journey and a residential project. This year, however, recipients were in for a particular treat, as Prince Harry himself was on hand to present the Gold prizes.

For those that are familiar with the Awards, they will have noticed that the normal order of things was disrupted this spring, as the qualifications for Gold - the third and final award level - became much more stringent. This year, only 150 students from across the country were awarded Gold, all of whom worked incredibly hard to achieve the prize. Five of those recipients were from Greenwood College School.

While the journey was harder, the reward was arguably brighter than ever: His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales - in Toronto to promote the Invictus Games - paid tribute to the Awards that were founded by his grandfather, Prince Philip, by presenting each Canadian Gold recipient with their prize. Little more than a smile and encouraging words from the prince were needed to make the event an incredibly memorable one, for the lucky recipients and their families alike.
