Week of Reconciliatory Action

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
From November 27 to December 1, Greenwood recognized the Week of Reconciliatory Action. We learned about Indigenous history and current issues, recognizing that understanding the past is essential to reconciliation in the present and future. Our learning emphasized the role of each individual in promoting reconciliation.

These themes were poignantly discussed in a presentation by filmmaker Mike Downie. He spoke about his collaborative project Secret Path and the story of Chanie Wenjack, a twelve year old boy who died escaping Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School.

This presentation set the tone for the rest of the week. Each day, students learned about a different theme important to reconciliation. The week culminated with special activities for each grade level on Friday: crafts with traditional materials, a screening of Secret Path, and a guest speaker presentation for students in Grade 10 to 12 by Ojibway storyteller Aaron Bell.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
