PARTY Program at Sunnybrook Hospital

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
About 25 student members of the PARTY (Prevention of Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) Program took a field trip on December 1.

They spent the morning at Sunnybrook Hospital, where they learned learned about the consequences of dangerous behaviours like drinking and driving from the people who deal with it firsthand. ER nurses and a police officer spoke to the students about their experiences dealing with alcohol and risk-related tragedy as first responders. Students met with a 17 year old recovering from a motorbike accident, who spoke to them about his experience and recovery.

In the afternoon, they went to the nearby Lyndhurst Rehab Center where three exceptional guest speakers shared their stories. They spoke candidly about suffering from severe trauma, and how they have been able to cope and work towards recovery. Their stories were truly inspirational.

Learning about the consequences of dangerous behaviours from those who have lived through them makes these lessons about risk reduction more impactful. Field trips like this help students understand through empathy.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
