Visit from MP Carolyn Bennett

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
On December 21, the Honourable Carolyn Bennett visited Greenwood and spoke to Grade 12 Law students, along with Ms. Wright’s Grade 9 English class.

As an MP, Bennett has held multiple ministerial positions and is currently the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs. She presented about her long political career and the role of an MP. She answered student’s important questions on reconciliation, colonialism, and mental & physical health. She talked about how youth can be leaders today and into the future.

MP Bennett also met with students from the Service Learning Committee to speak about ways to build engagement and awareness around issues specific to First Nations children.

Through her talks with students, she built upon the themes students were introduced to during the Week of Reconciliatory Action. As was discussed during the Week of Reconciliatory action, education and understanding are essential to the ongoing process of reconciliation; the chance to speak with the current Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations gave students a valuable opportunity to further their understanding.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
