Looking Back on the Winter Sports Season

Sam Clark, Director, Athletics
The playoffs have finished, marking an end to the winter sports season. Here is a rundown of how the Grizzlies ended their seasons.

Basketball
All three of our boys basketball teams qualified for the playoffs this year.

The U14 Boys finished in second place in their first season back up at the Division 2 level. They travelled to Villanova on Saturday where they lost a tough game to Appleby in the semi-finals.

The Junior Boys ended the season strongly, winning back-to-back games against RSGC and Lakefield to seal a spot in the playoffs. They faced top-seeded Villanova in the quarter-finals and lost a hard fought game on their home court.

The Senior Boys also finished the season on a positive note, winning their last four games to finish in third place. They too lost to Appleby in the semi-finals, but wrapped up their season with an exhibition game against RSGC at the Air Canada Centre.

Hockey
It’s been an excellent year for hockey at Greenwood.

The U14 Boys team enjoyed a superb season, finishing in second place in their league. They played in the Final Four championships, facing off against Nichols School from Buffalo at Appleby. It was a tough loss, but the boys played hard.

The Senior Girls also had an excellent season. In their first year back in competitive action after a three-year hiatus from league play, they made the playoffs before earning a huge upset win, knocking off third seed St. Clements in the quarter-finals. They went to Hamilton for the Final Four championship, where they lost to De La Salle in the semi-finals.

Finally, the Senior Boys team had an excellent season, finishing in first place in their league with an 8-1 record. This past Friday at Leaside, they won a close championship game against RSGC, beating them 2-1 in the shootout. Congratulations to the team for winning Greenwood’s first hockey championship since 2012.

Volleyball
For the first time, Greenwood had two teams play at the U14 level in girls volleyball. We had one group in D1 and a second team in D3. While both teams missed out on the playoffs this year, they showed a great deal of development, commitment and hard work.

The Junior Girls team also missed out on the playoffs this year, after a tough season in a competitive division.

The Senior Girls however, had a very strong season in Division 1B. They finished in first place with a 7-1 record and hosted the Final Four, here at Greenwood this past Saturday. They won their semi-final 3-0 to set-up a final against Lakefield. In what was an exciting game, played at a very high level, the team came back from 2-1 down to win in 5 sets. Congratulations to the team and their coaches on the win.
