Discussing International Women’s Day

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
In recognition of International Women’s Day, on March 9 five Greenwood students took part in a morning of learning and discussion about feminist issues at the Toronto-St. Paul’s 2018 International Women’s Day Summit.

Hosted by the Hon. Carolyn Bennett, the conference brought together female students from eleven local schools. They heard from five panelists who come from diverse professional backgrounds, including the federal government, academia, and law enforcement.

Following a panel discussion, students broke out into groups with students from other schools. Together, they discussed what they learned from the panelists and considered the provided prompts. Each panelist joined a group, guiding the conversation. They rotated between the groups so every student got a chance to meet with each panelist.

This group format allowed students the unique opportunity to speak directly to the panelists. Everyone had the opportunity to learn from the perspectives of everyone else and every student had the chance to participate.

After the lively discussions and closing remarks by students and panelists, the attendees left feeling energized and more aware of women’s issues and what they can do to create change. We hope the student attendees can bring back their learning and share it with the rest of the Greenwood community.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
