U14 Touch Rugby Team Undefeated and Going Strong

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
The U14 Touch Rugby team has been having an excellent season. They are 15-0, having won every game this season. In fact, out of their 15 games, they have only ever conceded two game play tries.

They are a newly co-ed team this year, and are the only co-ed team in the competition. According to Coaches Mr. McFarlane and Mr. Findlay, “our diversity has put emphasis on coming together as group to work towards a common goal.”

They’ve taken a unique approach to organizing the team, which they feel had created the foundation for the team’s strong cohesion and spirit. They are using a squad system. Of the 18 players in the squad, 12 are selected to attend each carnival, meaning the team makeup is different each time. This has created some healthy competition, as well as encouraging team bonding and ensuring everyone works together, encouraging a team-first culture.

There have been a number of great moments this season, from Isaiah Viel scoring two full field tries to Cameron Somerville and Seamus Flaherty scoring numerous “twinkle toes” tries, using their quick feet to get around opposing players.

Another key to the team’s success? Their enthusiasm for improving has never flagged. They are eager to keep improving, learning new strategies and set plays and game plans each practice to help them stay ahead of the competition.

As they come into the playoffs, we look forward to seeing more of their signature high-energy playstyle. Go Grizzlies!
