Showing Our Spirit

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
It was a beautiful day on May 18 when Greenwood students and teachers headed down to Serena Gundy Park for Spirit Day. They were dressed in their house colours, decked out in everything from cowboy hats and tutus to Mr. Sargento’s banana suit.

The day started off with the customary House Cheer-off. Led by their House Captains, each house gave their best cheers, chants, and choreography, with Mr. Hardy and Ms. Thomas as judges. The cheers got everyone fired up to rep their house through the rest of the day’s activities.

Up next? The Amazing Race! The teams split up to solve puzzles and complete challenges to earn clues and solve a mystery. Once they had the correct answer, they ran to the finish line as a team.

Throughout the rest of the day, houses kept the energy up, cheering on their peers in events like tug-o-war and the tire derby — a Kilcoo tradition! Even teachers got a chance to earn points for their house in the Staff vs. Staff competition.

Once the final results were tallied, Wernham came out on top, followed by Latimer and Fraser, with the rest of the houses following close behind.

There are a few more chances to earn house points before Celebration Day, when the House Cup will be awarded. It has been an exciting year for school spirit, and Spirit Day was a wonderful demonstration of the growth of house pride at Greenwood.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
