Summer Learning at Greenwood

Mary Gauthier, Executive Director of the Greenwood Centre for Teaching and Learning
Each spring, teachers get down to work, collaborating with colleagues in the Summer Institute.

Teachers are divided into working groups, which are determined by our strategic goals and school needs in the areas of student learning and well-being. This year's groups were Grade 9 and 10 Advising, well-being, Geography and co-teaching in Math. After reviewing current research, school data and resources related to their topic, each group sets goals. Based on these goals, the groups work to revise current programs and lessons, and to develop new ones.

Heather Thomas, VP Student Learning and Mary Gauthier, Executive Director of the Greenwood Centre for Teaching and Learning, met with each group throughout the Summer Institute, offering guidance and prompts to keep the groups moving. They brought the groups together to meet over the course of the four days, giving teachers an opportunity to share ideas and support each other in their work.

These meeting also allowed for teachers to make valuable connections between their ideas and the school’s overall goals. They did a walk around and discussed the connections between each group’s work and schoolwide initiatives such as personalized learning.

Teachers reported feeling deeply engaged throughout the Summer Institute. They valued the time to focus on professional learning and authentic work with their colleagues as they worked to better meet the needs of our students.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
