Greenwood Alumna Visits Art Classes to Speak about OCAD
Colleen Petch, Visual Arts Teacher
On October 11, Mackenzie Southey (‘17) spoke to the Grade 12 Drawing and Painting/Visual Arts students and a Grade 9 Visual Arts class. Mackenzie is currently a second-year student at OCAD in the Environmental Design program.
Mackenzie spoke about OCAD's portfolio requirements, the entrance interview process, her experiences to date with projects, transitioning from Greenwood, and possible careers in the arts. She stressed the importance of her visual arts courses and assignments, as well as lessons in perseverance in helping to guide her to OCAD and success in the arts.
As well, Mackenzie spoke about participating in her first public art show and sale this past summer. She even sold some of the work she created while at Greenwood.
The connection between our arts alumni and current students is valuable in helping students to understand the importance of their classroom work to future skills and options.
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
