Broadening Perspectives at Arts Day

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
Arts Day: it is one of the most anticipated days of the Fall term, a full day when students can try out a variety of different artistic disciplines, many which they have never had a chance to explore. On October 18, students in Grades 7-9 rotate through four workshop sessions, exploring everything from drawing, painting, and calligraphy to DJing, caricatures and origami.

There were thirteen different workshops that students could choose between, based on what they were interested in exploring. They learned about these unique art forms from practitioners who are active in their fields. Some learned how to use makeup and a bit of latex to create special-effect zombie makeup straight out of The Walking Dead. Others learned how to safely and realistically choreograph a stage fight, or perform circus tricks like juggling and plate spinning. After learning from a stand up comic, students workshopped their own jokes and performed their stand up routines under a spotlight.

Students also got to see other artists in action. Arts Day started with kick-off spoken word poetry slam by All-Star Poets. Between the workshops, there was a miming performance from Tottering Biped Theatre.

After this year’s Arts Day, we hope students have taken away a new artistic interest or two, whether that is jewelry making or improv!

Students Sydney Smith ('22) & Colette Pitts ('22) wrote about their experience during Arts Day.

Every year Greenwood has its annual Arts Day. On October 18, students in grades 7-9 had the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun activities. From stage combat to zombie makeup, to body percussion, students got to try it all and experience different arts. Each student had an individual schedule with four different activities that fit the student’s interests.

The day started off by gathering the students in the gym where they watched three slam poets and were exposed to different forms of poetry. These poets exposed students to rap poetry, emotional poetry, and humour poetry, all of which were delightful.

Then, students went off to their first two workshops. After lunch, students gathered back into the gym where they watched a professional mime performance. The mime showed that our imagination is the key to all art forms. Afterwards, students all went to their last two periods of arts workshops.

We went home with a new understanding and appreciation for all arts. After this year’s Arts Day, students at Greenwood might have found a new passion and maybe even a new hobby. We can’t wait for the next Arts Day!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
