Building Wonderland

75 staff and students have been hard at work, putting together an ambitious production of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. With only two weeks until opening night, the excitement is building up—almost as fast as the set pieces!

Alice in Wonderland Jr. features the most ambitious set ever for a Junior Play at Greenwood. From rose-covered hedges, to a moveable boat, to colourful costumes, the crew is certainly constructing a Wonderland worthy of the name. One of the most striking pieces is a 15-foot tree, which houses the Cheshire Cats. Ms. Webster’s husband provided some outside help to build it. After the big windstorm in September, Mr. Wright and Mr. Morrison—armed with chainsaws, axes, and safety gear—collected large branches to adorn the tree and make it even more realistic.

Ms. Liburd's senior visual arts class has been adding to the play’s artistic vision. They are designing and building large-scale paper-mache projects and painting work for various set pieces.

The cast and crew have had a wonderful time putting the play together.

“It's a really fun play to put together visually, with big colours, costumes, and characters,” Mr. Wright said. “There is a wide variety of genres represented in the music, and the songs are catchy and fun to sing.”

The play features a large ensemble cast with lots of opportunities for students to take on exciting roles. There is a very balanced representation of participants from Grades 7, 8 and 9. It is also a story that is easily relatable for participants.

Mr. Wright explained, “The main theme of Alice in Wonderland is celebrating non-conformity through Alice's journey of self-discovery. It's a very relevant play for our middle school students.”

The cast and crew can’t wait to share the production with you! Get your tickets through the school portal.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
