The crowd was cheering and cowbells were clanging—the energy was palpable in the gym on October 3 for this school year’s first Friday Afternoon Lights. After the success of last year’s Friday Afternoon Lights, the Athletics Committee has organized another one for this athletic term. The Senior Girls’ Basketball and Senior Boys’ Volleyball teams played against Branksome Hall and Royal St. George’s College respectively to kick things off.
Despite having a reduced roster, the Senior Girls’ Basketball team defeated Branksome Hall 35 to 25 across the four quarters. We saw a great effort from several Grade 9 and 10 players from the Junior Girls’ team, who were called up to fill up the Senior Girls’ team. At half-time, the Cheer Squad held a half-court throw competition with several members of the audience.
The Senior Boys’ Volleyball team started off strongly in the first set, but lost their lead. Although the team put in great effort in the second and third set, they eventually lost 3 sets to 0 in their match up against Royal St. George’s College. However, the team celebrated their Grade 12 players in a Grade 12 Spotlight after the game in which family and friends cheered on their accomplishments as Grizzlies.
Look forward to our next Friday Afternoon Lights in the winter season. Go Grizzlies go!
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
