Greenwood Is: community

Heather Thomas, Principal
Greenwood’s community is a source of great pride for me. I often hear from Greenwood families past and present – as well as from applicants to Greenwood – that it’s the welcoming feeling when you walk through the doors that sets Greenwood apart.

This month, the Greenwood community has provided me with a sense of pride many times.

The first such occasion was when I sat at the downtown breakfast event at Stratus Restaurant on April 2, listening to four Greenwood alumni share their stories of how Greenwood has impacted their education and careers. I looked around the room and saw Board members, volunteers, staff, current families, new families and alumni, and thought “This is what Greenwood is all about.” It’s a connection and network of support for life.

Last week, our parent Roundtable arranged and hosted the No Pausing on Menopause event. Again, sitting in the Greenwood Theatre with an amazing community of women seeking information on this topic that still remains somewhat in the shadows, I felt grateful that Greenwood could offer a safe space and time for this important conversation.

A huge thank you to the Roundtable for their generous support of this event and our community in various ways – running grade socials for parents, offering social celebrations throughout the year, the used uniform sale, book club, Wintergreen, staff lunches, and so much more.

April is Volunteer Month and we thank the Roundtable as well as all of those who donate their time to our school.

Yes, Greenwood is a school – and a wonderful one! But we are also so much more. I encourage you to connect in many of our community building opportunities this Spring:
  • Grandfriends Day (for grandparents and grandpals)
  • Alumni Reunions (remind any Greenwood alumni you know!)
  • Spring Parent Grade socials (Check Week at a Glance)
  • Arts Everywhere night (May 15)
  • Athletics Games
  • Lynn Lyons presentation on April 28.

We culminate the year with Greenwood Celebration Day. This is one of the most important days in the Greenwood calendar. It is a full community event, an opportunity for us to come together to celebrate the growth and character building that takes place throughout the year, and to share the stories of our student and staff successes. Please mark June 13, 2025 on your calendar and plan to join us at Greenwood Celebration Day. More details will be shared via email in May.

Happy Spring, Greenwood!

Sincerely,
Heather Thomas

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
