Emma Kim (’17) Wins Bronze Medal at World Synchronized Skating Championships in Colorado Springs

“I train every day,” says Emma, who began her synchronized skating career in Grade 7.  “Training every day teaches me how to be prioritize.”  Time management and completing school assignments while committing to synchronized skating are keys to her success.

Throughout her tough training and competition schedule, Emma has relied on the support of her teachers and synchronized skating team, Nexxice. She has worked closely with her teachers to ensure she stayed on top of her studies. While concurrently attending school and competing, she learned to keep herself very organized and face challenges with ease.

Her success doesn’t end there. Her achievements in synchronized skating won her international gold and national champion status in a competition in Hamilton in 2015.  She couldn’t have done it alone.

“My team is very supportive,” says Emma. While competing in Colorado Springs, she fell ill with a virus, “When I was sick in the hospital, they [my team] were very supportive to make me feel better.” It wasn’t about winning a gold medal or making it to the finals - it was about team building and support.

Being a student, family member, friend, and teammate is a major balancing act.  What has she learned about making it work? “It [skating and school] can be hard mentally, physically and emotionally,” says Emma.  But through it all, she’s gained emotional toughness and the will to persevere.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
