Black History Month at Greenwood

Erin Taylor, Communications Officer
Throughout the month of February, we have been recognizing Black History Month through a number of events and initiatives.

We have had guest speakers in our weekly assemblies. Morgan Campbell kicked off Black History Month at Greenwood. Campbell is an award-winning sports writer and presenter for the Toronto Star Speaker’s Bureau who often investigates the intersections of sports, race, and politics. His presentation explored these themes in the context of Black History Month, such as the NFL protests and the activist role of athletes like Colin Kaepernick.

Spoken word poet Ian Keteku, who many Greenwood students know from his poetry workshops, gave a presentation and performance. With his poetic style combining humour and seriousness, he spoke about the meaning and purpose of Black History Month, and the concept of justice.

The display screens have been highlighting the achievements of major figures both historical and contemporary that students in sports, the sciences, arts, and politics, including a weekly mystery challenge for house points. The Learning Commons is highlighting authors from Lawrence Hill to Roxane Gay.

As our Principal, Allan Hardy said in his address to the school, Black History Month is not just about history. It is about making sure that we are listening to all voices.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
