Parenting in the Digital Age

Tihmily Li, Communications Officer
In a digital age, it can be difficult to know how to make sure your teenager has the right knowledge and tools to build their resiliency in digital spaces. Navigating this new territory can be challenging for parents/guardians, but it isn’t impossible.

Kathryn Connelly, Director, Student Well-Being and Mary Gauthier, Executive Director, Centre for Teaching and Learning were excited to invite Jake Ernst, clinical director at Straight Up Health, to speak with parents/guardians on how to better understand and recognize red flags in their teens’ digital lives.

On January 26, Jake presented to over 90 parents/guardians on how they can protect their teenagers’ mental well-being in the digital age. Parents/guardians were treated to a professional and thoughtful presentation and gained a deeper understanding of the digital era that our teenagers inhabit. Jake’s presentation and solutions are based on research and his own clinical experience with teens.

You can review Jake’s highlights and resources from his presentation HERE. You may find slide six to be of particular interest; Jake shared the aspects and apps that are productive and highlighted areas where parents/guardians and teachers should be concerned. On subsequent slides, Jake shared some advice on how to support teens, keep a positive relationship and centre care in our interactions with them.

Stay tuned for information on future parent/guardian sessions in Week @ A Glance and in your email.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and as settlers, we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
