CAIS Accreditation

Did you know that Greenwood is a member of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS)? Established in 1981 CAIS is a national network of schools supporting collaborative initiatives in leadership, education, management and governance.

CAIS membership requires Greenwood, as an independent school, to maintain high standards and to demonstrate commitment to educational excellence and school improvement. Over 90 schools are currently members of CAIS, and all of these schools commit to undergoing a reflective and collaborative school improvement process, meeting National Standards and participating in research and professional learning.

Greenwood consistently evaluates its educational practices and programming with the goal of continued improvement; however, external review from experienced educators can reveal new perspectives and opportunities for growth. The CAIS accreditation process is focused on both accountability and school improvement. Through a school-wide self assessment and a peer review led by a Head of School from another CAIS school, this process ensures that Greenwood’s school practices meet the highest National Standards.

The preparation for our peer review is taking place this year. Heather Maxted, Expert Teacher in our Greenwood Centre for Teaching and Learning, is leading our exploration of each aspect of the CAIS standards; this process allows us to identify areas in which we are leading the way amongst our CAIS peers, in addition to areas where there are opportunities for growth and improvement.

Offers of admission to Greenwood are going out this week to prospective students and their families. For many of these families, knowing that Greenwood is a CAIS accredited school is of particular importance. We are proud to be a part of this national network and recognize how critical it is to hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards -- doing so enables us to give our students the best educational experience possible.
