Fall Athletics Assembly

Greenwood’s athletics awards have traditionally been presented at our annual Athletics Banquet at the end of the spring sports season; this year, we’re trying something a little different. Our team awards will be presented in an all-school assembly at the end of each season, giving our whole community the opportunity to celebrate our athletes and coaches.

The fall season was another strong one for Greenwood. Our U14 Boys’ Volleyball team captured the CISAA DII banner, seven cross-country athletes qualified for the OFSAA championships, and many teams advanced to the playoffs. (Read a full recap of the fall season here.) At the assembly, we recognized a Most Valuable Player and a Coach’s Award recipient for each team; the Coach’s Award is given to an athlete who consistently demonstrates dedication, teamwork and a positive attitude. You can find a full list of the award winners here.

This season also featured a best-ever finish for our basketball program: our U14 Girls’ team competed in CISAA’s highest division, going unbeaten in the regular season and taking home a silver medal from the playoffs. During the assembly, U14 players Grace Tanenbaum (‘24) and Lauren Masterson (‘24) spoke about the season - their first as Greenwood athletes.

“Grace and I had such a good experience on the team,” Lauren said. “Even though we are in the same Adviser group, we got to know one another even better while playing on this team. It was really fun to play our favourite sport together and meet new friends. We would recommend joining a team to anyone!”

“One of the best parts of being on our team was our amazing coaches, Ms. Coffin and Mr. Vachon,” Grace said. “We were really proud to have Ms. Coffin as our coach and know that all of her energy showed how much she cared. Mr. Vachon would make sure we all knew the plays on the bench and at practice and would give us really positive feedback and comments to build our confidence.”

Later in the assembly, graduating student Sydney Doyle (‘19) spoke about what she’s learned from her time as a Grizzly. Sydney has played on a team nearly every term since she started at Greenwood in Grade 7, and for her, being on a sports team is about more than skill.

“It’s about the community,” Sydney said. “Sports have allowed me to become friends with people from all grades. They’ve allowed me to dance on the bus, and to cheer in the stands with new people every term and every year. Although not every Greenwood team is winning Division I finals, that’s not what matters to us. We care more about our community and how we treat our teammates, and that reflects exactly what our school prides itself on.

“If it weren’t for these teams and the leadership skills I’ve developed through them, I don’t think I would be the same student I am today.”

Congrats to all of our fall athletes and coaches on a terrific season! Check out the album below to see photos of all our award winners.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
