While there has been activity with respect to the new campus greenspace project, we will have to wait a little longer to enjoy its completion.
The 63,000 square foot multi-use space south of the school building is part of Greenwood’s bold masterplan to re-imagine the campus of the future and help our students and staff gain access to dedicated greenspace.
It will include a playing field, outdoor classroom, practice space, and an ice rink in the winter.
This past summer, community engagement took place with the city and a demolition contractor was secured. Samples were extracted for the environmental assessment and the abatement work has been completed.
While it may not look like much has changed on the site, a lot has been happening behind-the-scenes, says Ty Diamond, Greenwood ‘11 and President at Diamond Kilmer. Ty is Chair of the Greenwood Building Committee comprised of alumni, parents and past parents with experience in development, architecture, landscape design and building projects.
“The rezoning application process is well underway along with coordination for demolition of the existing commercial structures pending permit approval,” he said. “We’re working collaboratively with the City to expedite what has been a slower-than-anticipated approval process, but expect to be able to achieve all required approvals in early 2024.”
“Our project team continues to move things along and I’m hopeful that we will see our teams practising on the space and students in the outdoor classroom by this time next year,” Sarah Bruce said. “For now, our teachers, coaches and students continue to use partner outdoor spaces and available nearby greenspace as often as they can.
“We know that old phrase ‘good things come to those who wait’. And our new space will be so great. Thank you for your patience, Greenwood!”
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
