Raising the Bar: From Greenwood to Western Varsity Star

Lilah Rosenthal, Alumni Officer
Michele Horak ’24 always knew she wanted to be a multi-sport athlete. Today, she is living that dream on the Western University Mustangs Track & Field team, and it all started with a single spark at Greenwood.

During her Grade 12 year, Michele’s track coach, Ms. J, encouraged her to try high jump for the first time. What began as a fun challenge quickly turned into a breakout season. As Michele recalls, she "went on to win CISSA and Metros and podium at OFSAA in high jump," a spectacular run that led to her being signed as a high jumper for Western’s varsity team.

Her momentum didn't stop at graduation. In her first year at Western, Michele made the Ontario University Finals in high jump, helping the Mustangs capture a team championship.

“This year, I was chosen to be a varsity pentathlete, and I am living my dream as a multi-athlete,” Michele proudly shares. “Just imagine, the spark from a teacher at Greenwood ignited my passion for track and launched my trajectory as a varsity athlete. I couldn’t be more grateful and proud to be an alumna of Greenwood.”

Balancing Academics and Athletics

Growing up as a ski racer with a deep love for the outdoors, Michele was a natural leader at Greenwood, often helping her peers feel comfortable on challenging Outdoor Education trips. That supportive environment helped shape her mindset. “Greenwood was a great fit and helped me set the bar high both academically and in my athletic pursuits,” she highlights.

Michele partially credits Mr. Thibeault, Mr. Farbstein, and Mr. McFarland for their inspiration and encouragement on her decision to attend Western, where she is currently studying Kinesiology. Her studies and sports have intersected -  in her Biomechanics class, she analyzed the mechanics of shot put while actively competing in the event.

Juggling hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot put, and the 800-metre run means Michele knows a thing or two about a packed schedule. Her number one piece of advice for current student-athletes?

“Strengthen your time management skills,” she says, emphasizing that the intense balancing act is entirely worth it. “Stay connected with your community, take risks, and find the support you need to succeed.”

What’s Next for Michele?

This summer, Michele is competing in the Provincials for the combined events (heptathlon) as well as some individual events, including high jump. She also plans to spend plenty of time outdoors, reconnecting with the spirit of adventure that Greenwood helped foster.

We can’t wait to see Michele continue to clear every bar she sets for herself!
