Greenwood Students Carve for Change

Kate Raven
This November, members of Greenwood’s Student Council will once again attend the Ontario Student Leadership Conference (OSLC). This conference brings together student leaders and their advisors from across the province for a series of presentations and workshops, with the goal of further developing their leadership skills.

Each year, the OSLC selects a cause, and asks each attending school to raise $250 in support of that cause. The cause chosen for 2012 was World Vision’s Leadership Training Programs for Latin American teens. Our Student Council found a unique way to blend their fundraising efforts with Halloween spirit by organizing Carving for Change, a student pumpkin-carving contest.

Students entered the contest in teams of 4 or 5, paying a $10 entry fee. Each team got a pumpkin to carve, and carving tools, from the Student Council. After the pumpkin-carving took place on October 30, the Greenwood community then tossed loose change into their favourite pumpkins, with the pumpkin containing the most money being declared the winner!

Congratulations to the team of Allie Russell, Torin Offord, Virginia Farrar, Allison Goddard (all ’13) and Connor Alexander (’18), who won the voters over with their Greenwood “peace tree” design. The other winner? World Vision, for whom the Student Council raised over $500!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
