Brigitte Shim and A. Howard Sutcliffe Appointed to Order of Canada

Kate Raven
The Order of Canada, one of Canada’s highest civilian honours, was established in 1967, during Canada’s centennial year, to recognize a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Over the last 45 years, more than 5,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order.

Brigitte, along with her partner Howard Sutcliffe, were both awarded the honour for their contribution as architects, ‘designing sophisticated structures that represent the best in Canadian design to the world.’ Brigitte and Howard are principals of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects in Toronto, an architecture and design firm interested in the integration of furniture, architecture and landscape. Shim-Sutcliffe’s completed work includes the Integral House, Corkin Gallery, Weathering Steel House, Muskoka Boathouse, Moorelands Camp Dining Hall, Craven Road House, Laneway House, House on Hurricane Lake, and Garden Pavilion and Reflecting Pool. They are currently completing a new home for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto in East York. Their architectural work has been awarded twelve Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Governor-General's Medals and Awards for Architecture, among many other citations.

Brigitte is a tenured Professor at the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design where she has been teaching since 1988, as an engaged faculty member leading numerous design and research studios. She has also been an invited visiting professor at Yale University, the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne and Harvard University. She is also an active member of the international design community, participating in numerous international, national and local design juries, helping to bring attention to exemplary design in many communities.

Brigitte has been a member of Greenwood’s Board of Directors since 2009 and more recently a member of the Greenwood Building Committee. Her son Sam graduated from Greenwood in 2012; her son Simon is currently in grade 10.

Greenwood sincerely congratulates Brigitte and Howard on this extraordinary and well-deserved honour.

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
