Like many university students, Liz Chisholm wasn’t sure what career was right for her. “It was in biology class with Ms. Clarke that I first became interested in a career in the sciences,” she said. That interest led her to Western for a BMSc in basic medical sciences, where she graduated with the Gold Medal for her program.

However, during her first years of studies at Western, she couldn’t picture what career these studies would lead her to. “Greenwood fostered my creativity and the love I have of working with my hands,” she said, along with her desire to contribute meaningfully to her community. It was important to her to find a career in the sciences that would also account for these other interests.

She was in her fourth year of her BMSc when she realized dentistry was the answer she was looking for.

“What I found interesting about dentistry was the hands-on artistic aspects,” she said. “It also provides the opportunity to be creative and think on your feet to solve problems that can make a huge difference in your patients’ lives.”

She was accepted and has thrived in the University of Toronto’s dentistry program. At the end of her first year, she received three prestigious awards and was selected for a competitive summer research program.

According to Liz, the broad skill base and community values she developed at Greenwood provided the strong foundation upon which she has built her career in dentistry. She has been able to begin a career path that is fulfilling, and one where she has the skill set and interests to succeed. “It was a decision,” Liz said, “that I have never once looked back on.”
