Welcoming our Grandfriends to Greenwood!

Xavier Nash, Communications Officer
The overcast skies and spring-time drizzle could not put a damper on Greenwood’s annual Grandfriends Day! On Tuesday, April 28, students and their grandpals gathered in the Lodge to celebrate this time-honoured tradition, beginning with a light breakfast and greetings from Student Leadership and Principal Heather Thomas. From there, students and their grandfriends were free to explore the school, where teachers and students hosted various activities and opportunities for the grandfriends to familiarize themselves with Greenwood.

Arts and science classrooms were abuzz with students proudly showing grandfriends their work, while other groups gathered in the gym for games of mini-putt, shuffleboard and ping-pong. In the theatre, the school band entertained guests with soft jazz and classical music, while groups that remained in the Lodge were treated to solo performances from various students throughout the morning. Guests seemed intrigued by the school’s use of AI and application in classrooms, with many in attendance for the AI demonstration sessions hosted by Ms. Cooper and Mr. Tompkins.

Thank you to all the students and staff that helped put together yet another successful Grandfriends Day, and to the students in the theatre and Lodge for their excellent performances.

And thank you to all of our grandfriends for joining us this year. It is always a pleasure to invite such cherished members of our community into the school, and we hope you had a memorable and exciting day!

We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
