Celebrating Creativity and Artistry With Arts Week
Xavier Nash, Communications Officer
From visual arts, photography and much more, there is plenty to celebrate within the Arts community here at Greenwood. Starting on Monday, May 11 and lasting until Thursday, May 14, the school held its annual Arts Week to recognize the achievements and contributions of that very same community. Sketched portraits, traditional paintings and sculptures created by students from all grades were on full display in the Lodge for all of Arts Week.
The celebrations weren’t limited to the displays however, as various activities and programming were held by the Arts Committee throughout the week. Students interested in crafting activities could meet in the Lodge for a “bedazzling” session while those seeking a theatrical experience could be found in the theatre playing improv games. Before classes on Tuesday morning, Samantha Jaskolka ‘26 and Ander Smith ‘27 led a campfire sing-along with students and staff in attendance.
On Thursday morning, the entire school gathered in the gym for the final Greenwood Mic of the school year, with plenty of performers delivering a wonderful send-off. After announcing this month’s Artist Spotlights, the Arts Committee Execs closed out the event, and encouraged their peers to pursue the arts and make use of the resources available within the Arts community.
By Thursday evening, the stage was set to close out the week’s celebrations with the Arts Everywhere Showcase. Students, staff and parents/guardians alike were treated to the art installations set up for Arts Week as well as some new additions specifically for that evening. Artists were found at their stations presenting their artwork to guests, who were willing to give feedback and share their thoughts in writing. Those who gathered in the theatre experienced performances covering music, drama and film.
The theatre showcase opened up with the Grade 7 Vocal Class’ performance of Shakira’s Try Everything, followed by the Grade 7 Band performing the Beatles' Yellow Submarine and the Grade 9 Band’s performance of Sweet Caroline, by Neil Diamond. To close out the musical session, the Jr. Jazz Band performed Doxy by Sonny Rollins.
Grade 11s in the Drama Theatre class put on their one-act play, Stage 11, written entirely by the students themselves. The evening would end with a special screening of Lost Contact, a television pilot created by the Grade 12 Film Studies class. Advertisements that ran during the screening were created by the Grade 12 Advertising class.
Thank you to the students, staff and Arts Committee for putting together another incredible Arts Week and showcase!
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
