March’s Middle School Assembly: The Arts At Greenwood
Xavier Nash, Communications Officer
The start of the spring season means that Greenwood’s clubs and committees are busy preparing for activities and events before the school year ends. On Tuesday, March 31, the Grade 7s and 8s were treated to an Arts-themed assembly to get in the spirit for these spring activities.
The assembly began with an observance of Trans Day of Visibility, with the IBP Committee reiterating Mr. Pitman’s speech from the March 23 full school assembly. Keeping up with the themes of respect and inclusivity, the current leaders of the Kindness Count were announced, celebrating Anaya Thompson ‘31, Sam Morgan ‘30 and Neill Theunissen ‘30 as the individual recipients and the Grade 7s as the winning grade.
Following the Kindness Count, Ms. Borden and Ella Roland ‘27 were introduced to talk about their experiences with the Arts at Greenwood. Ms. Borden spoke about her passion for theatre and the opportunities she’s had working in the school’s various plays. She told students about the importance of the Arts in human history and culture, and the privilege of being able to engage in it frequently at Greenwood. Ella, who’s been involved in Greenwood’s Arts programs since first coming to the school, encouraged her peers to get involved with the Arts.
“If there’s something you're passionate about but you’re nervous about signing up for it, you should still take the leap!” Ella said.
Students at the assembly also heard from peers in their grade and their experiences with artistic pursuits. Kiki Blackstock ‘31, an avid dancer, spoke about how much she practices her hobby and how she treats any mistake she makes as something to learn from. The second speaker from this segment, Hannah Gosevitz-Foulds ‘31, has been involved in nearly every Greenwood Mic this school year. She talked about her initial apprehension to participate in Greenwood Mic and how her decision to get involved was rewarding for both at school and the countless hours she dedicates to singing and performing outside of school.
To round out this arts-filled assembly, the cast of the full-school musical gave a sneak preview of two songs featured in this year’s production, The Prom. There are roughly 70 students participating in the full-school musical, either in the cast or stage crew, showcasing the community’s endless passion and commitment to artistic expression and creativity.
We acknowledge with gratitude the Ancestral lands upon which our main campus is situated. These lands are the Ancestral territories of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabek and the Wendake. The shared responsibility of this land is honoured in the Dish with One Spoon Treaty and we strive to care for the land, the waters, and all creatures in the spirit of peace. We are responsible for respecting and supporting the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. When away from this campus we vow to be respectful to the land by protecting and honouring it. We will create relationships with the people and the land we may visit by understanding the territories we enter and the nations who inhabit them.
